First, let me say that I'm an omnivore, and proud of it. I love all your arguments, no matter how one sided they are ;) Meat is good for us, in moderation. 6 oz of meat (of just about any kind) is healthy and gives us much of what we need in a daily diet. I think the real problem is that people tend to eat much more than that in a single sitting, much less a day. Another problem is that seeking food to replace meat and giving up the taste (yeah, the vegans I know swear they hate the smell/taste) of meat is a struggle that most of us don't want to mess with. I don't like the taste of tofu, soy, or veggie burgers. I eat salad and vegetables and love potatoes, but honestly, too much of anything is bad. A varied diet is what we need. I'd suggest everyone do some investigation to find out what a "serving" size should be before giving up some food they enjoy.

This makes me sick sick sick. From the first time I heard people griping about the use of ethanol for biofuels and how "taking corn off the table and putting it in the gas tank" is "criminal" I've said the same thing you've posted! Imagine how many people we could feed if we stopped giving all that grain to those poor factory farmed cows. Not to mention the health and other environmental benefits. Why has this not been mentioned in the media????? Keep fighting the good fight!!!

Good post! I've been singing this song for some time now, even writing to NPR's Marketplace for blaming the food shortage solely on biofuels. The more of us shouting the truth, the more people will hear.

You're right it really is a scandal. Even during the 1984 famine in Ethiopia, the country was still growing and exporting animal feed to the West.

Thanks. And I know, that poor kid. I might try to do one of those "adopt a kid" programs where you pay for their food/schooling, etc. I read more about it and now I basically want to save everyone.

Man, I am such a Debbie Downer!!!
