Peter Singer IS an animal welfarist. Do you really think he explains Animal Rights well in Animal Liberation?

Singer defends the idea of consciencious omnivorism. He believes it is morally defensible for us to exploit animals as long as they are "treated humanely".

Whether or not you agree with that, is it not obvious Singer's work is fundamentally welfarist?

it is hard to contain my passion for these issues. i think it all boils down to awareness. my blog is called TRUE AWARENESS. i feel it's when a conscientious and sensitive awareness drives your actions, that you finally respond to the issues with THAT sensitivity. also, it seems that each person can experience awareness differently. unfortunately for me, and for some, those people may not be ready to join my fight.

for instance, aside from advocating "animal rights", i feel as though certain facts are indisputable and morally and horribly wrong. ANIMALS, ALL ANIMALS, ARE LIVING BEINGS. AND THERE IS NO DISTINGUISHING. AN ANT IS LIKE A SPIDER IS LIKE A CAT IS LIKE A TIGER IS LIKE A HUMAN. AND IT IS WRONG TO HARM OR KILL A LIVING BEING.

THIS POST IS THE PERFECT FORUM FOR ADDRESSING THOSE ISSUES. THANKS.

LORI: Thanks for coming by - and yes, I think most people, vegetarians and omnivores alike, can agree that animals should be able to live free of pain--something that certainly isn't happening on today's factory farms!

I am not a vegetarian but I do think that you're on the right track as to how to pursue this. You have to have some sociopathic tendencies to think it's acceptable to not treat animals well or provide for their comfort. Animals should be allowed to reach maturity, have space to move reasonably for an animal their size, food they like in amounts that are appropriate, reasonable healthcare - all that stuff.

Almost everyone already agrees on those principles. As we develop ways to allow people to act on those principles, I think we can move the marker much farther down the board.

Keep fighting the good fight. :)
